CASE STUDY

Transporting hydrogen efficiently and economically

Situation

Hydrogen is a key component in global decarbonisation strategies. However, traditional steel pipeline infrastructure faces significant challenges including embrittlement, high installation costs, and substantial carbon emissions.

We worked on behalf of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero who wanted to understand the feasibility of an innovative solution to safely transport hydrogen while dramatically reducing environmental impact and installation time.

Solution

Hive Composites developed a thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP) system specifically engineered for hydrogen infrastructure. We created and fully tested a system, made on a commercial manufacturing facility, featuring a sophisticated multilayer design that’s thermally fused for complete hydrogen containment.
